9-Million Afghani Irrigation Project Launched in Janikhil, Paktika
An irrigation project in the Khanjaki area of Janikhil district, Paktika province, has been completed at a cost of over 9 million Afghanis and was inaugurated in a formal ceremony. This project was implemented in collaboration with the Directorate of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock of Paktika, technical coordination by the Hilto Institute, and financial support from the World Food Programme.
According to information released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, the project includes the construction of a water reservoir, 500 meters of stone-lined canal, a 12-meter water wheel (Tarnab), and two standard small dams (Pulchaks). The total cost of the plan is reported as 9,083,393 Afghanis.
Officials say that with the operation of this irrigation network, hundreds of jeribs of agricultural land will be irrigated systematically, water wastage will be reduced, and the conditions for increased crop yields and improved economic status of farmers will be established. Effective water resource management in agricultural provinces like Paktika is considered a fundamental need for farmers.
At the inauguration ceremony, the head of Paktika’s Directorate of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock presented a certificate of appreciation to the Hilto Institute for its role in implementing the project. The provincial head of the economy also emphasized the continuation of similar projects and expanding cooperation in agriculture and rural development.
Residents of the Khanjaki area welcomed the initiative and called for more sustainable and infrastructural projects in the future. The Directorate of Agriculture of Paktika reiterated its commitment to continuing efforts to strengthen agricultural infrastructure and attract effective projects aimed at boosting farmers’ economic growth.
